WDC Legislative Battles
For a second time as the President of the United States, Donald Trump has taken action to eliminate the United States Marine Mammal Commission. This federal agency is the only federal agency that offers an unbiased oversite to the policies and oversight to the polices and management of marine mammals in the United States.
The Whales and Dolphin Conservation group has been busy this month working hard to push back against the proposed “Streamlining Environmental Approvals” (SEA) Act scheduled to take a full vote in the House of Representatives next month. This Act would eliminate funding for the United States Marine Mammal Commission in 2019. For more information you can visit the WDC website here .

130 Whales Die at Hamelin Bay, Australia
On March 23, 130 short-finned pilot whales were discovered stranded in Hamelin Bay, Australia. According to the WDC, thousands of whales and dolphin find themselves in these life-threatening situations every year and although the main reason has not been identified, it is predicted that sudden, loud underwater noises can cause marine wildlife to strand themselves. Dolphins and pilot-whales in particular are susceptible to strandings due to the strong social connections within a family. One whale or dolphin that finds itself in shallow water by accident can cause many animals to consequently strand while they are attempting to help their troubled family member.
The WDC actively strives to understand why these strandings occur and assists to rescue these stranded whales and dolphins and transport them safely back in open waters. At White Whale Web Design, we are proud supporter of the Whales and Dolphins conservation and the work they do on a daily basis for all marine wildlife. The Importance of Mobile Optimization
In 2016 it finally happened. Mobile overtook desktop for the primary device used to access websites. In 2017, marketing agencies started using the word “mobile optimization” as a way to hint to their clients that being able to view a website on a device over than a desktop is going to be very important. In 2018, mobile optimization is now an absolute must for any website wanting to grow in an ever-changing market. Is your website optimized for an iPhone? What about a Samsung Note? What about those large desktops that look as if they could double as a TV? Or a tablet? Mobile Optimization does not simply mean optimizing the viewing area of your website for just mobile phones, but for all types of screens in every shape and size.
Is your website optimized? Well if you don’t know, it is very easy to check. Just grab your phone and go to your websites URL and see what your website looks like. If you have a tablet you can also check your websites structure on that screen too. If your website is not mobile ready, this is the time to optimize your website. At White Whale Web Design, we offer a complimentary website audit with every consultation; you can sign up for a consultation with one of our team members here.
Google's Algorithm Receives a Core Update
On March 12, 2018 Google announced a core update to their search engine algorithm.
Google’s Statement on Twitter:
“Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year. As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded. There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”
If you have noticed changed in your rankings this month with no major changes to your SEO strategy, it is likely a result of this update.
